I am Canadian. I know English and about HSK1 French. Just started learning Mandarin. I vote for Mandarin. French does sound kind of smooth and soothing, but Mandarin has tones. You don't learn to speak Mandarin so much as you learn to sing it. Also you learn Chinese through poetry, like Tang dynasty Li Bai.

I'm surprised so many young Taiwanese can speak Taiwanese!

All mandarin, cantonese, etc sounds like idk maybe how you describe how vomit sounds? How farts sounds? I guess if you can describe how a language smell like a fart is with Cantonese or mandarin

Please keep doing what you’re doing. It has been challenging to find a Mandarin teaching channel with Taiwanese mandarin content and Taiwanese context. Language is powerful. Especially when Taiwan is under great pressure and threats from China. Please never cave in replacing traditional Chinese for simplified Chinese subtitles in your videos. It could be good as suggested in other comments to have simplified somewhere possible as well There are enough of them. And we need more of your kinds. ❤

Local people in Taiwan are quite nice when you try to learn Mandarin Chinese, (but won't fawn over you like in inland Chinese cities such as Chengdu or Chongqing) but it's super helpful to have a person tutor through iTalki or in person, and once you get to an intermediate level, it's good to have a helpful partner that points out your mistakes so you don't develop a false sense of confidence.

The pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan is very clear and crisp which makes in easy for foreigners to learn in here. Unfortunately, the reason for that is because local dialects were forbidden, discouraged, mocked, and even punished from the 1940s until the 1980s so the accent in northern Taiwan (Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, and Taoyuan) in particular is quite easy to learn since it isn't influenced heavily by dialects.

@EasyMandarin: Can you check the English translation at 5:48? The English translation says "Japanese is basically useless", but the Chinese characters imply a more subtle wording like "Japanese is basically unused (in Taiwan or by me)" which is a more polite way to talk about the language in the context of Taiwan or his personal life experiences.

I've been learning Mandarin Chinese for nearly a decade, but that's the first time that I heard the Chengyu (four character idiom) at 1:58. I highly recommend newer learners to the language to pay attention to this one and other Chengyu that you can pick up as it helps with fluency and it impresses native Chinese speakers quite a lot.

Open mind time - stop being precious about democracy. democracies have become dependent on socialist capitalist states. We call the social capitalists in our own country 'patriots', even though they are leveraging outside our government. But both decoratic capitalism and Socialist capitalism point the finger when ever the leveraging is from outside. Point being, There is very little difference between types of states at the social capitalist level. Government let's them donate to who ever they want. China, America, Australia, probably anywhere.

I used to live in China and I love China and I love tea. But THAT is really disgusting, especially the slimy thing on the bottom. If someone wants to show disrespect for tea they drink 奶茶。

Why are people complaining about their Mandarin accent?! I’m learning Mandarin and I have no issues understanding their accent. People need to remember that China is a big country and the accent differs depending on the region. Places like Xiamen etc have similar accent to those found in Taiwan.

It would be especially helpful if there could be both both the simplified and traditional characters as subtitles for us learners, maybe put the simplified hanzi right above the traditional hanzi, or maybe only do this when the character is different in simplified, I understand this might crowd the screen with both the pinyin and English already there, but it would be valuable to have them somewhere on screen if possible :D

There's a couple contenders; Japanese, Spanish (especially from Latin America), Finnish, Italian, Bambara...I don't really know

For those complaining on lack of Simplified characters: there are a lot of other channels to choose from. For Easy Mandarin authors: thank you for posting videos with Traditional Characters, your channel is a rare gem for learners of Taiwanese Mandarin. Would you wish to include Simplified characters, it's possible to do so via subtitles, but please keep Traditional hardsub.

It’s so sad there is no “easy mandarin” because this one is “easy Taiwanese” which is much harder to understand in my opinion Also different characters and word choice
